HOLLY, Mich. — Bronchos at Holly Middle School and the district’s elementary buildings celebrated March is Reading Month with a packed lineup of fun, innovative and exciting reading events and activities inside and outside the classroom. The events are part of the district’s continued commitment to student literacy and fostering a lifelong love of reading for all Bronchos.
Highlights included:
Holly Middle School staff regularly posted “shelfies,” or selfies of their favorite book or bookshelf, and teachers handed out “Caught Reading” citations that entered students into a drawing for an Amazon gift card. During one week in March, the school held a third-hour read-along of a children’s book as a throwback to students’ younger years.
At Holly Elementary, a “mystery reader” theme asked students to collect daily clues to guess the identity of different staff members. In addition to the daily guessing game, students participated in reading logs, contests and classroom activities that promote a love of reading.
At Davisburg Elementary, students took part in “One Book, One School.” Each family received a copy of the same chapter book to read together at home, thanks to funding from the Holly Education Foundation. At school, students created their own video about the book “Appleblossom the Possum.” Davisburg students and teachers also participated in a Masked Reader game, which challenged students to determine which staff member was reading a chapter behind an animal mask.
At Rose Pioneer Elementary, teachers Ashley Szokola and Lindsey Putnam kicked off March is Reading Month with Fairy Tale Mystery Literacy Night, a schoolwide event with a Peter Pan theme. Students received a swag bag of mystery tools, including a mystery book, notebook and
more to help them solve the mystery. Families were also provided a calendar with daily literacy-themed events and activities to encourage reading both at school and at home.
Patterson Elementary students dressed like historical figures after reading an autobiography or biography about their chosen historical subject. Students also gave presentations on their favorite nonfiction book or topic, then wrote their own autobiographies. Later in the month, the Patterson students dressed like their favorite fictional book character, and brought superhero books to share with friends at school.
“I would like thank our amazing Broncho teachers and staff who went above and beyond to organize and make these innovative, fun and engaging reading activities possible for our students and families,” said Scott Roper, Holly Area Schools superintendent. “Working together as one Broncho community, we will continue to encourage a passion and love for reading that lasts a lifetime and helps prepare our students for success.”
