Holly High School students team up with kindergarteners to bring ‘monsters’ to life
Childhood development project part of district’s commitment to preparing Bronchos for in-demand careers
HOLLY, Mich. — Holly High School child development program students recently applied what they learned in class in real time, and in the process helped Broncho kindergarteners bring their imagination and creativity to life.
Miranda Barth, Holly High School’s child development teacher, teamed up with Rose Pioneer Elementary kindergarten teachers Kristie Brown and Tonya Edwards for the interactive lesson.
The kindergarteners colored pictures of monsters they imagined after reading the book “I Need My Monster” by author Amanda Noll, then answered prompts to describe their monster’s personality. Their pictures were then sent to Barth’s child development students, who created stuffed animals based on the drawings. The older students also wrote stories based on the information provided by the kindergarteners.
The activity culminated on May 13 when the high school students visited Rose Pioneer to deliver the stuffed animal monsters to their assigned students and read to them. The teachers provided copies of “I Need My Monster” at no cost for each Rose Pioneer student to take home.
“It was truly inspiring to witness my students put what they learned in class into practice interacting with the younger students,” Barth said. “This fun and engaging activity provided my students insights into child development careers and our Broncho kindergarteners a chance to see their budding imaginations brought to life.”
“I’d like to congratulate Miranda, Kristie and Tonya for organizing this innovative activity for our students to put what they learn in school into real-world action,” said Scott Roper, Holly Area Schools superintendent. “We look forward to providing more unique opportunities that help prepare our Bronchos for success and careers while still in our hallways.”
